Jorge Lorenzo’s third successive victory at Mugello was his second of
the season and raises the World Champion to second place in the Riders’
Championship.
The Yamaha Factory Racing rider started second but took immediate
advantage of a mistake by pole-sitter Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team),
who ran wide at Turn 1.
“I knew it was going to be a really hard race because it got much hotter than it had been in the morning,” the Mallorcan said after the race. “In the morning we were quite fast; we were also fast in the afternoon, but not the same – three or four tenths slower.
“Dani was following me for about 13 laps, but on the 13th I pushed a little bit more – to be about three tenths faster - and it seems he gave up a little bit, so it was much easier from then.”
Heading to Round 6 in Barcelona, Lorenzo has moved to within 12 points of Pedrosa atop the standings, jumping Honda’s Marc Marquez who crashed at Mugello on Sunday.
